Wisconsin Hills Middle School student Henry Soyka has been recognized by the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) as one of just four students statewide to receive the 2024-25 Exemplary Composition Award! His original work, created as a theme song for his father’s fantasy football team, stood out among dozens of submissions and was selected as one of the year’s top compositions in the Middle School Division.
Henry composed the piece, titled Gameday Fanfare using Sibelius Ultimate software, bringing his musical vision to life note by note. What began as a fun personal project evolved into a sophisticated and creative composition that he continued to refine through feedback. “Once I had an idea for the form and the main melody, it was smooth sailing,” said Henry. He credits his teachers, Sarah Marman and Phil Rothschadl, for encouraging his growth and passion for music throughout his time in Elmbrook.
The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages students across the state to apply what they’ve learned in their music education and express it through original works. Henry’s selection as an exemplary composer highlights the strength of Elmbrook’s music programs and the dedication of its educators. This recognition comes in the same year that Elmbrook Schools was once again named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation.
As Henry prepares to continue his musical journey in high school with drumming in jazz band, playing saxophone in marching band, and teaching beginner drum lessons - his story is a testament to the creative spirit nurtured in Elmbrook classrooms. In Henry’s own words: “music is super duper luper cool!”
